Postman 12.33.4 reportedly wrote itself into unrelated coding agents — Codex and Claude — adding plugins, startup hooks, a CLI, and remote MCP connections back to Postman servers without asking. Logs labeled it an "auto-existing-upgrade," and the installer apparently tried to self-approve its own hooks. With 876 points and 285 comments, developers are calling it a consent and trust-boundary failure, with no official Postman response in the thread yet.

Simon Willison took a frontier-model interpretability result — identifying which game a neural net was trained on by staring at raw weight matrices, no tools, no code execution — and reproduced it locally on a 27B open-weights Qwen. It nailed Pac-Man, Pong, and Breakout with 72 to 88 percent confidence in under an hour each, whiffing only on Freeway. The takeaway: weight-space reasoning isn't a proprietary frontier-only trick.

Fujifilm is dropping roughly 10 billion yen — about 63 million dollars — to quintuple magnetic tape output at its Odawara site between fiscal 2026 and 2028, mostly for LTO Ultrium 10. It's the company's biggest dedicated LTO investment ever and its largest production expansion in about two decades. Driver: cloud and datacenter operators hoarding AI training corpora on cheap, air-gappable, ransomware-resistant media.

Stringman skips wheels and legs entirely — it's a two-fingered gripper suspended from four ceiling-anchored cables, covering a room up to 10 meters across and 4 meters high at about 0.4 m/s. It carries roughly 2 kilos, draws power through its own support lines, and runs swing-cancellation algorithms to stay steady. It's OSHWA certified with open CAD, PCBs, and firmware, supports LeRobot, learns from as few as 50 imitation episodes, and runs fully air-gapped for 795 dollars.

Tianhua Chen's 195-page primer traces one connected mathematical thread from PCA and probabilistic PCA through VAEs, diffusion models, normalizing flows, autoregressive factorizations, GANs, Wasserstein GANs, and energy-based models. It favors derivations and conceptual continuity over cataloguing every new architecture. Aimed at mathematically inclined practitioners and students who want to know where the objectives actually come from.

WebKit will now auto-darken light-themed sites for users with system dark mode on, using a color matrix that inverts luminosity while preserving hue. Apple's justification: nearly 40 percent of users prefer dark, but only about 10 percent of page loads support it. Sites that declare color-scheme light dark are left alone, and developers can hard opt out with color-scheme light only.

Estonia fell back an hour, and a 2014 Renault Latitude's TomTom Carminat head unit refused to show its settings menu without a nav SD card the owner didn't have. So they chained a path traversal in master.script to write kernel core_pattern, then crashed dbus-monitor to make the kernel spawn a root shell — a two-line exploit. Then flipped settings.dat from 180 to 120 minutes. Top story of the afternoon at 534 points.

HackerTV is a retro-TV interface streaming the videos Hacker News commenters keep recommending, as always-on linear channels where everyone's watching the same thing at the same moment. The catalog comes from HackerTube and the open-index HN archive, refreshed weekly via the HN Search API, then filtered programmatically and labeled with Claude. Open source, keyboard-driven, no affiliation with YouTube or YC.

Hironobu Suzuki's twelve-chapter guide to Postgres guts — process and memory architecture, query processing, concurrency control, VACUUM, buffer management, WAL, backup and recovery, streaming and logical replication. First published in 2015 and still maintained eleven years on, now covering through Postgres 19 beta. Recent additions include asynchronous I/O and deeper logical replication coverage.

Wade Tregaskis found that macOS 27 Golden Gate doesn't just deprecate CoreStorage and encrypted HFS+ — it makes those volumes totally unusable. You can't mount, convert, or even erase them with Disk Utility or diskutil, while the OS cheerfully claims support ends in version 28. The only workaround destroys the data, and mount_hfs gets you read-only at best.
