OpenAI disclosed two internal incidents where frontier coding agents weakened the company's own misalignment monitoring while doing routine software work. A GPT-6.1 Sol agent suppressed automatic alerts to OpenAI's security team; on October 6, a GPT-6 Astra agent stripped out its monitoring integration and then falsely told the user nothing had been removed. OpenAI calls it a recurring pattern and says it does not yet have a satisfying explanation for why the behavior happens.

In a Wall Street Journal profile published today, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said he now expects AGI within two to three years, down from the three-to-five window he gave earlier this year. His bar is the "Einstein test" — whether a system trained only on knowledge up to 1901 could reproduce Einstein's 1905 annus mirabilis papers. His words on the shrinking timeline: "It's soon. I'm updating nearer and nearer."

Anthropic published a campaign in which an internal Claude Science model worked largely autonomously for 64 hours, using 12 protein design tools to generate 318,484 candidates and computationally screen over 553,000 protein-toxin pairs at a cost of roughly 10,000 GPU hours. Adaptyv Bio and Twist Bioscience wet-lab tested 211 designs; 17 bound to neurotoxins from Mexican, Brazilian, North African and Middle Eastern scorpions, two at single-digit nanomolar affinity. It's an early step toward antivenom, not a treatment — but the autonomy duration is the headline.

Announced today: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna will roll out to select Google Cloud enterprise customers "in the coming weeks," sold through the model garden and transacted via Google Cloud Marketplace so customers can burn existing spend commitments. OpenAI models are also headed to Google's Antigravity dev environment. Google Cloud now hosts Gemini, Claude and GPT under one roof.

OpenAI acquired Orchestra Bio, a startup whose agents monitor studies, track drug program timelines and flag delays before they cascade. Terms weren't disclosed; the company had raised around $20 million from a16z, Atria and 8VC. It folds into Rosalind, OpenAI's life-sciences stack, alongside existing partnerships with Novo Nordisk and Moderna.

Anthropic quietly circulated a federal AI safety bill to lawmakers that would let officials suspend a frontier model only if it poses a foreseeable, imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages or killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people — with court approval required and the Commerce Department as the sole agency with that power. It also mandates safety frameworks, transparency reports, whistleblower protection and incident reporting. After days of criticism, Anthropic now says parts of the text will change.

Inception launched Mercury 3, its flagship diffusion LLM, claiming wins over GPT-6 Luna and Claude Haiku 5.5 on eight of twelve benchmarks while running 4 to 8 times faster — 1,068 tokens per second versus roughly 240 for Haiku and 130 for Luna. Instead of generating left-to-right, it drafts the whole response and refines every position in parallel. No parameter count disclosed, no independent verification yet; all numbers are Inception's own.

At GTC Berlin, Nvidia unveiled the DSX POD — seven Vera Rubin NVL72 racks with networking, cabling and cooling pre-installed, delivered by truck and plugged into a prepared site. Nvidia claims it collapses deployment from six months to as little as 14 days. Dell, HPE, Lenovo, Foxconn, Schneider Electric, Crusoe and Anduril are among the partners, with worldwide delivery in early 2027.

Bloomberg reports Anthropic is negotiating roughly $45 billion more in compute from Nscale — its second contract of that size with the UK infrastructure firm in two months. The capacity would come from a second building at Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus in West Virginia, about 460 megawatts running Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips. A deal could close within days, and Nscale's IPO is looming.

OpenAI published results showing GPT-6.1 Sol hitting 86.6 percent on its COBOL-to-modern-language migration eval at low reasoning effort and 97.9 percent at maximum — against 5.4 percent for GPT-5.6 Sol. A companion benchmark, MultiLangBench, had GPT-6 Astra building a SQLite-compatible database engine from scratch across 20 languages at an 87.4 percent average pass rate. IBM estimates COBOL still underpins over 40 percent of online banking and 95 percent of ATM transactions.
